Mark in Dallas: Do you know if Violet and Charlotte are coming back on Private Practice?

Good news! KaDee Strickland has confirmed her return for the third season, but it did come down to the wire. Says KaDee, "Until I got my pickup letter, I didn't think I was coming back like the rest of us. I think Amy [Brenneman] got hers; I'm sure she did. It should be an interesting thing to see what they do when we come back."

Episode 3.01 - Sides Summary

Anesthesiologist- OR, night-Dr Carroll is standing there with the Anesthesiologist, they are all watching the monitors. Dr Carroll asks her to check the probe, the probe is fine. Angela (not a side) is tachy at 130...140.… Anesthesiologist says there is no pulse, that she’s still in fib. Dr Carroll starts CPR, her mind is racing, she says come on. All of a sudden there’s a pulse. Everyone breathes.

Cop- ER, night- Matt stands with the Cop who is running through the standard questions. Cop questions Matt on him saying the person they are looking for had a criminal record, the molester. Matt responds with asking if people are out there looking. Cop informs him that there is an Amber alert out, that everyone is looking, then ask if he was at the crime scene. Matt says, maybe if they put it on TV. The Cop asks what Matt’s relationship is, Matt doesn’t respond, just asks the cop why he’s not out there looking. Cops asks again what his relationship is.

Pediatric Surgeon- OR night- Dr Marshall walks alongside Peds surgeon. Dr Marshall tells him he has to get to the ER. Peds Surgeon says that they can finish. Dr Marshall looks at the surgeon. Tells the Ped. Surgeon not to screw it up, they say they won’t.

Nurse1- OR Night, Dr Carroll turns to the nurse and asks for more blood, nurse says it’s on it’s way.

Dr Carroll seems like Addison, I think she's either with the wife, or she's with Violet could be either. I'd say Violet as my 1st choice. Matt seems like Pete, in shock over what happened, other option would be Cooper.

Dr. Marshall could be either Dell, after delivering the wife's baby (why can't I remember her name), or Naomi there going to find Violet.

Can I have some Private Practice scoop? — Fernando

MATT: Are you wondering who (if anyone) will save Violet from her non-elective C-section? While some speculate that Cooper will return to Violet's abode, Tim Daly leaves open the possibility that it's Pete who will come a-knockin' at the opportune time. "The only thing I will say is that, knowing Shonda [Rhimes], whatever is the least convenient thing to happen will happen," Daly told me with a laugh. "She always finds a way of making it very difficult on everybody, and I like that — even if I sometimes disagree with it."

'Practice' makes perfect?

Tuesday on the "Private Practice" set, which series creator Shonda Rhimes called "the medical practice of my dreams," actress Amy Brenneman was present, talking to reporters. In the May cliffhanger, her character, Violet, was held by a psycho intent on cutting Violet's baby out of her womb.

"I don't even know what Amy Brenneman is doing here, because she dies. Maybe no one told her," joked Chris Lowell, who plays office manager/nurse Dell.

"Maybe she's a ghost," Rhimes said, then thought better of the joke when she realized she's already done that with Dead Denny on "Grey's Anatomy."

The new season will pick up 20 minutes after the cliffhanger, and it's safe to say that Violet seems likely to survive. Rhimes said the interesting part of "putting somebody in that position is watching to see them get out of it."

This is the third season Rhimes will be running both "Practice" and "Grey's." She said over time the writers have figured out what kind of stories fit each show best.

"When we're discussing medical stories and the writers argue over what to do, it's an episode of 'Private Practice,' " she said. When the characters have to rise to the challenge of a medical case, it's a story for "Grey's."

Still, "Practice" has never been the hit "Grey's" once was and many fans complained in the first season when Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), who spun off from "Grey's," seemed to get defanged. Even Walsh acknowledged the character changed, but she said Addison has always been changing.

"It's a different dynamic but the truth of the matter is on 'Grey's' she changed as well," Walsh said, sitting in the Oceanside Wellness Group waiting room. "She was deconstructed over three seasons and became more vulnerable and more human."

In the third episode of the new season, Addison will get a visitor from "Grey's": Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) will "visit to do a procedure," Rhimes said, "and make her own comments about what's going on here."

Sides are out for 3.03,

Ryan-16 yrs old, was in a car accident and is currently in a wheelchair, his mother is Bette (40 yrs old). Matt (Cooper) is at Ryan's house talking to him about a girl (Kellie) that he is dating. Ryan has been in a wheelchair for two years, and is tired of it. Wants his therapy to go quicker, he thinks Kelli won't like him much longer. Ryan tells Matt that his mother is constantly watching him, Matt teases that he has everything he needs Wi-Fi, Digital Cable, Netflix, Take-out, it's perfect, that he has the hottest girlfriend at his high school. Ryan tells him they've never even kissed, how good can they be. Matt (Cooper) tells him it takes time, he's making progress. Ryan wants to walk by the next day, so he can go to the high school dance with Kelli. Cooper tells him it's not going to happen, and Ryan is upset because of another guy that will be at the dance and he thinks Kelli will go off with him. Ryan tells him he doesn't understand, that Matt (Cooper) has a girlfriend and gets to have sex. Ryan is tired of talking, and talking...that's all they do (he and Kelli). Matt does something to get Ryan out of his chair, and he is going to the dance. Bette doesn’t' want him to go, doesn't want him in a car again. Tyler (not a side, I think is Pete) talks her into it. Bette asks if Tyler has kids, and he says yes. Bette then becomes sick, Tyler checks her out and they assume she has a flu from the stress.

Emily- 30 yrs old. (Seems like Bailey's case). Her husband seems to need a transplant, and either she is a match, or there is a three way transplant going on. Not sure, they call her husband two separate names. Confusing side, but Jessica is a surgeon, and it's a kidney transplant. None of the PrP doctors do this, so... Jessica is also called cold, and the other doctor defends her, says she is good. Possibly Sam maybe..

So nothing on Sara, I know CW is going to PrP, but it doesn't make sense that the casting call says that Sara will also have to film for GA too. So maybe Sara is involved in this transplant case somehow?

As well, there is a new location for the Emily side. It says INT- St. Sterling-Exam Room??

ETA Nurse side- At St. Sterling, walks up to Megan (not a side) and informs her that Robert Taylor (not a side) is in Exam Room B.

Amy Brenneman was on set, so it was clear pretty quickly that Violet survives the attack by her unstable patient. But that doesn't mean she's unharmed. "She gets hurt. Big time," Brenneman said. "She is saved — I mean, she survives. But she gets hurt. It's ugly." We won't have to wait long to find out the details: The first episode of the new season picks up just 20 minutes after the last scene we saw.

After that, though, the episodes will jump a bit forward in time, and things in Violet's relationship with Cooper won't be the same. "There is an emotional fallout for him," Brenneman said, explaining that not only are Violet and Cooper no longer roommates in the first part of this season, they haven't even really spoken for a while. Added Paul Adelstein: "Cooper is kind of avoiding her. He's avoiding going back to the house. . . . He's trying to pay a lot of attention to her, but he feels this guilt that he can't even quite identify, I think." Adelstein said Cooper thinks he's just giving Violet space to bond with her baby — which means, yes, there is a baby!

Some other hints about the new season:

* Cooper and Charlotte are still together and just as dysfunctional as ever — and the stress of dealing with their own reactions to Violet's trauma isn't doing them any favors.
* Naomi really has moved downstairs to the other practice (her on-set office was practically empty).
* "There's a lot of Pete" and Violet, Brenneman said — though Sheldon will also continue to appear. The first episode of the season involves a lot of flashbacks with Violet and Pete, including Pete's early days at Oceanside.
* Addison is going to start the season single. "And maybe to a comedic extent," Kate Walsh said. "There might be a pet cat involved."

Will Violet & Her Baby Survive on 'Private Practice'?

On the season finale of "Private Practice," Violet (Amy Brenneman) had been given a paralyzing drug by a mentally unstable patient, who planned to cut Violet's baby out of her womb and claim it as her own.

So does the "Private Practice" shrink survive? When ET visited the set of the ABC medical drama, Brenneman was back to work, but that didn't stop exec producer/creator Shonda Rhimes from joking, "Maybe she's a ghost," but the real answer is a resounding, "Yes."

"We are going to pick up about 20 minutes from where we left off," Rhimes said. "I thought the most interesting thing about putting someone in that position is to watch as you get them out of it. So, we are reintroduced to the ["Private Practice"] world in a high-stakes way."

That said, ET asked Brenneman who is her character's baby daddy? Is it Pete (Tim Daly) or Sheldon (Brian Benben)?

Brenneman teases us, commenting, "I just found out and I am not saying."

As for the real-life case where a baby was allegedly cut out of its mother's womb in Massachusetts this past July, Brenneman says, "That copycat stuff freaks me out. I knew of another case that predated our show. I think people were very affected by the season finale. It was a very powerful mojo to put out there."

In other "Private Practice" news, Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) will crossover from "Grey's Anatomy" and be visiting the Oceanside Wellness Center to learn a new medical procedure. The visit will take place in the third episode of the season.

"Private Practice" returns for its third season on a new day and time: Thursday, Oct. 1 at 10 p.m., immediately following "Grey's Anatomy."

Question: Do you have anything scoopy for Private Practice? The season finale left me clinging to my seat and cringing in pain for Amy Brenneman! —Mallory
Ausiello: Two things I can share: Violet lives. And twenty minutes will have lapsed between the last frame of the finale and the first frame of the premiere.

Question: I loved Addison and Noah on Private Practice. I know Josh Hopkins is on Cougar Town now, but will he return to give closure to the storyline? —Jamie
Ausiello: Currently, there are no plans for Hopkins to return. Amanda Detmer, however, will be back as his wife.

Renowned neonatal surgeon Addison Montgomery moved from Seattle to Los Angeles to reunite with old friends, Naomi and Sam, and join their medical practice, Oceanside Wellness Group. The doctors have worked on difficult cases where there is no right or wrong, they have saved and lost lives, they have gone through financial turmoil and come out the other side. Now, the ties that bind them are tested as never before:

Violet is viciously attacked by her psych patient, Katie Kent, a disturbed woman who, after losing her own unborn baby, is convinced Violet is now carrying it. Katie cuts Violet open to extract her baby, leaving her to bleed to death. Violet's survival depends on someone finding her and saving her life, but who will find her, and will Violet's child survive the trauma?

Pete, at last, has declared his love to Violet, whether or not her baby is biologically his. Having already lost his wife to cancer, Pete will face the fear of losing his new love.

Sam has also just declared his love for his estranged wife, Naomi. No longer able to work alongside her ex-husband and deal with their on-again, off-again relationship, Naomi leaves the practice she founded to work at rival Pacific Wellcare.

Cooper, torn between his love for Charlotte and his obligations to his friend, Violet, must deal with the guilt of being only steps away from Violet during her crisis and not knowing anything of the horror on the other side of the door.

Charlotte is fired from her job at Pacific Wellcare and must find her equilibrium again after having been passed over for her dream job and feeling jilted by the love of her life, Cooper.

Dell will struggle to find his footing as a full-time father to his daughter, Betsy, as he pursues his dreams in the medical field.

The bonds of family, friends, and new lovers are shaken in one horrifying moment. Can this group of friends support each other through the pain?

ADAM: We can tell you this: The Oct. 1 premiere includes a funeral. Also, Violet is in very bad shape and her baby boy is missing. How are the two connected? Only time(lines) will tell.

Question: Are we going to see more of Dell on Private Practice this season? Chris Lowell is so talented it’s a shame to see it go to waste. —Deven
Ausiello: Believe it or not, we’re going to be seeing less of Dell this season. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Chris Lowell’s episode order has been reduced from 22 to a minimum of 13. Technically, he still remains a series regular though. Conventional wisdom says the move was budget-related, but a Private Practice insider says Lowell wanted more freedom to pursue other projects.

Question: Any scoops on Private Practice? —Lee-Ann
Ausiello: The premiere flashes back to Oceanside’s pre-Addison days to show how Pete, Violet and the gang first met. (BTW, the editing technique the show employs to transition between the past and present is utterly original and highly effective. It more than makes up for the laughable wig they slapped on Audra McDonald’s head.) The episode also features a funeral (no, not Violet’s), two harrowing surgeries, and an answer to this question: How will Chris Lowell’s aforementioned reduced workload be addressed on screen?

Anna in London: So disappointed to read Noah won't be back on Private Practice, not even to resolve that storyline. Could you please cheer up all the Addie fans with some Addison-related spoilers?
We've seen the Private Practice season premiere, and it's actually excellent. Addison isn't the spotlight character, but when she does come onscreen, she positively shines. Kate Walsh is an amazing actress. The premiere is based around a Pete-centric flashback that shows how he joined the practice and got to know all of the characters, particularly Violet. By the end of the episode, you very well might cry.
